Fire Dip

I’m on the island of Molokai (Hawaii).  We’re here for Thanksgiving.  As wonderful as turkey and stuffing are, I find myself craving something spicy after a few days.  Most of my regular spicy foods are not close at hand, but I picked up some Sriracha at the grocery store.  Put some in my spaghetti sauce.  Mixed it with my mashed potatoes and gravy.  But this afternoon we were having chips and dip, when my brother-in-law and I both watched the light-bulb go off in each other’s heads.

16 oz Sour Cream
1 package Hidden Valley Ranch Mix
Sriracha Sauce

Combine your ranch mix with the sour cream per the directions on the ranch mix package.  Mix in as much Sriracha as you like.  Oh, add just a bit more than that.  Enjoy with potato chips or corn chips.  Or on a spoon.

Jalapeno Happy from Tacodeli

Tacodeli in Austin Texas makes a “Blended Jalapeno Salsa“.  Had some at the house tonight.  I said “I think I’ll write about this”.  I sat down at the table to eat.  Moments later I heard my wife cry from the kitchen “Ow!  That’s food that hurts!  It’s deceiving!”

It is a smooth sauce, that you might expect was based on sour cream.  It looks cool and refreshing.  But it’s got a bite.  Pour it on!

No Pain: Trappey’s Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce

If I get something called “Trappey’s Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce”, I’m expecting it to hurt some.  We all know that the devil runs a place with a nasty reputation for a high heat index, so you think the Red Devil sauce is going to be hot, too.  But the devil is bad, and the devil is crafty.  Sauce named for him is going to trick you.  Not even a hint of flame on my tongue.  I literally poured this stuff so thick over a bowl of pasta that it was like spaghetti sauce, and I couldn’t distinguish any sensation of spicy heat at all.  Dropped a bunch of jalapenos into the bowl to give it the kick I was looking for.
